In
September, 1998, I went to Zimbabwe.
I was traveling by myself, so I wanted to go with a tour. I chose Contiki, and ended up very happy with the tour overall.
They specialize in 18-35 year old travelers, and when I found out that many of their
clients travel alone, I decided to go!
Yes, this was my
first trip outside of North America. Friends and family were surprised, and a little
disturbed, that I had picked Africa for my first trip abroad. My best friend seemed
doubtful, thinking maybe I should stick my toes in the international waters somewhere a
little more, well, tame. Like maybe Europe.
But I didn't want to go to Europe. Everyone's been to
Europe. The only cool things to see there are man-made. Nope, I wanted to see the majestic
beauty of nature, in her landscapes and animals. After looking through multitudes of web
sites and travel brochures, Europe looked positively boring next to Africa.
