Wondering where I spend most of my time on the web?
Knock yourself out!
News | Magazines
| Shopping | Travel |

I admit it, I'm a news junkie. I especially watch computer
and
networking news.
Slashdot.org - News for nerds. Like me. A nice range of
topics that interest most geeks.
CNN - Because there is life beyond my monitor,
whether I like it or not.
The Onion - the most reliable news source on the
net.
I never read the hard copies anymore...nowadays, print looks funny if
it's not scrolling.
Business
The Economist - My favorite business mag, but you have to
buy a subscription
Computing
Computerworld
Fun
Discover Magazine
National Geographic
Net and Web
InfoWorld
Network World
TechWeb
Amazon.com -
the first, the best.
Contiki - I took Contiki's Zimbabwe Discovery tour and
recommend them if you are 18-35 and traveling alone.
Business
Hoover's Online - "The Reigning King of Corporate
Profiles"
SEC EDGAR - Get the goods on public companies.
Telecom/Internet
Internet Architecture (by Russ Haynal)
- Not very pretty but a decent starter for the Internet architecture
newbie.
Misc. Reference
Ask Jeeves! - great
resource if you are looking for specific
answers like "What's the area code for Sandusky, Michigan?"
Salary Calculator - how much do you
have to earn in a different city to keep the same standard of living?
Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy -
I'm no fan of philosophy, but this comes in handy in the off chance someone mentions, say,
the St. Petersburg
Paradox. After all, dislike of a subject is no excuse for ignorance, right?
What does your phone number spell? - I assume this page is
why BILL-SUX (245-5789) is so hard to get in metropolitan areas :)
OneLook Dictionaries - OneLook helps with finding the things
that that aren't in normal English Dictionaries. It searches multiple industry and
technical dictionaries. Did you know ATM is used as an acronym for all of the following?
- Adobe Type Manager
- Amateur Telescope Maker
- Anti Tank Missile
- Anti-tactical Missile
- Asynchronous Transfer Mode
- Automated Teller Machine
whatis.com - Thousands of telecom, networking, and computing
terms defined. Accessible to the newbie, still useful to the expert.
dictionary.com
Library of Congress Home Page
Roget's Thesaurus
ZIP+4 Code Lookup
Google! -
So much for first to market! This is the best. It bases results
on how web pages link to sites, so it's good for finding stuff like company home pages.
They also cache most sites.
Yahoo! - Use it when you have a specific topic in mind, like
"Magazines for Web Designers", etc.
Ask.com- more of a reference tool than a search engine,
but it comes in handy if you are looking for specific answers
TUCOWS - where I get most of my
shareware/freeware.
